Book Club at the Coast

This month, our book club met in Los Osos, at the home of John C. Several members have homes in the area, and hosted travelers. John also provided an amazing Filipino dinner, much appreciated and enjoyed by all.

This meeting differed from most in that our wives were in attendance, as well as the book’s author Robert A. Kittle (with wife Luanne). Mr. Kittle shared his own journey of researching, writing and publishing his first book, Franciscan Frontiersmen: How Three Adventurers Charted the West.

Much of the discussion centered around the mindset of the Franciscans at the time (1770s) as relates to their treatment of the indigenous tribes they encountered and how greatly it differs from our contemporary view of such actions. Many comments mentioned the hardships endured by the Franciscans and the native population in their travels (by sea and land) as they explored and established the sites of the early missions.

Thanks to Mr. Kittle for sharing some of his vast knowledge of the subject!

An issue NOT discussed was which book we will read next, and who will be hosting…..
