Janis: Her Life and Music by Holly George-Warren

Janis Joplin. wow. She was amazing, a better musician and artist than I ever suspected. But an unfortunately messed up person who came from a conservative family and always wanted to please her parents while she continually engaged in self-destructive behaviors, sexual, alcoholic, and with drugs. She worked with everyone from Jerry Garcia and Country Joe to Big Mama Thornton and Tom Jones, B.B King to Pete Seeger. And she incorporated all of this into her music. Her band – Big Brother – held her back because they were mediocre musicians, but also supported her emotionally. She was, as were many, screwed (in several ways) by managers and music companies.
She was changing her style before her accidental overdose and it would have been an amazing contribution to music history had she lived. It was too strong white heroin that she bought and took alone (If friends had been with her she probably would have been able to be resuscitated.) What a loss.
I listened to this as an audiobook – great reader but unfortunately no music with it. The book was published in October 2019.
